Camstudio Rip Off?

March 19th, 2007 · 7 Comments

Hi guys

I’ve been contacted by a few people to bring my attention to this piece of software:

http://www.etrusoft.com/screen-recorder/screen-recorder-screenshot.htm

It does seem awfully familiar … does anyone know more about it?

Well I downloaded the Trial version - 15 movies. Got one to work then it crashed. I now have only 8 more tries because it continually crashed after that.
I have taken screen grabs through all of the option and setup pages if you want them.
There is no question that this is based on the same code and screens as CamStudio. It doesn’t have anywhere the same range of features so was probably a clone from earlier in CamStudio’s development but it is without question sharing the same heritage as CamStudio.
No idea what can be done about it, that’s up to you.
PS: and I just love using CamStudio for presentations and training tutorials etc.

I think it would help if you cleared up the licensing confusion–neither binaries nor source actually ship with the GPL & they include the original Rendersoft license (that said such rip offs were fine as long as Rendersoft was acknowledged in some way).

If you can figure this out (licensing), I would be interested. I posted a blog entry about this a little while back:

Of course, I also reviewed CamStudio awhile back - I’m keeping tabs on the Blog here so I can determine when it is updated! ;)

I encountered another cam app named “Super Screen Recorder” that also looks suspiciously similar to CamStudio. Download a free trial here:

All of these programs are believed to be from the Camstudio source code but is being used as a commercial product. I find this to become Illegal and should be reported as quickly as possible. Theres nothing worse then somebody trying to steal a program made by 1 company and sell it as there own. As to everybody, do not by these programs because they tend to have the same features as Camstudio.

I still offer free help on anything Camstudio and more so just drop me an E-mail at ColdbladeFAQ@gmail.com
