Hi All
I haven’t heard from Marcus who’s currently working on 2.6 for 3 weeks now.
I don’t want development on CS to stall, nor do I want all the “pressure” on one person to deliver, so I’ve decided to make CamStudio 2.5 available and class it as a Beta 1 release.
You can download the binaries and full source code from here:
CamStudio.2.5.b1.bin.zip <- Binaries (download this if you want to use it)
CamStudio.2.5.b1.src.zip <- Source Code For CamStudio Recorder, SWF Producer and CamStudio Player
MultiLang.src.zip <- Source Code For the Multi-Language feature
Here’s a link to a quick video explaining which files are which.
Here are the changes and fixes:
CAMSTUDIO RECORDER
- Recording Region By Window - ADDED
- Left and Right Mouse Button Visual Feedback When Clicked - ADDED
- True Multi-Language Support For Recorder, SWF Producer, and Player - ADDED
- Recording Audio From Speakers - REMOVED DUE TO LACK OF SOURCE CODE
- Recording For A Preset amount of time - ADDED
- New Effects Menu added with:
- Add System Time Stamp To Video
- Add Caption To Video
- Add Watermark To Video (Transparancy not supported, yet!)
SWF PRODUCER
- Added Redirect URL function so a viewer can be taken to another URL immediately after video has finished playing.
- Added Cancel button to “Converting to SWF” dialog so you can cancel a SWF conversion at any time. You don’t have to wait until it’s finished or force it to close with CTRL, ALT, DEL.
OUTPUT
- Firefox bug when playing a Flash SWF file - FIXED
OUTSTANDING STUFF
- When using another language, some menus and options are either missing or still in English.
- Native Vista compatibility not supported, but workaround listed on the blog using XP Compatibility Mode.
- Documentation (still working on it)
I haven’t included the documentation with this Beta release, but the additional features are extremely simple to use I’m sure you won’t have any problems (famous last words?)
If you’d like to help with any aspect of the CamStudio project, I’m currently looking for:
- Visual C++ and Macromedia Flash Coders [URGENT]
- Graphic Designers for the Flash Player Controls
- Moderators for the upcoming Forum.
If you’re interested, please email me at: info {at} instantsupersites {dot} com
Let me know what you think.
Cheers
Nick
UPDATE: If you get the following error message when trying to run the Beta …
“This application failed to start because MFC71.DLL was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.”
do the following:
1. Go back to http://www.camstudio.org/dev and download the MFC71.dll file into the folder where you have the 2.5 Beta binaries and try running CamStudio again.
2. If that doesn’t work, copy the MFC71.dll to your “C:\Windows\System32″ directory and reboot your computer.
Thanks to Stacy for pointing this out.

bummer about having to remove recording from speakers. Do you plan on having that added back in for the 2.6 release?

Hey Nick,
Great work - great software! We’ve based Screen Show Pro, our screen capture video program, on the original Cam Studio core code.
We found the source code to be well written, well documented, and easy to build on. We’re looking forward to incorporating the changes and updates into the newest version of Screen Show Pro.
Keep up your excellent work!

You don’t exactly have to give up on “Recording Audio From Speakers”. Have you ever heard of “Stereo Mix”? Some sound devices support it, but sometimes it’s disabled by default (in Vista for example).
It does work in CamStudio. If you would like to see how to do it, I can upload a video.
I use Stereo Mix all the time, couldn’t live without it.

Thank you so much! Works in Windows Vista. For some reason the older version would not; I think it may have been because I was not applying any of MS Vista’s updates(Compatibility & Reliability patches). Thanks again.

Thank you Nick. I really appreciate your hard work on this application.
9 Nick // Sep 6, 2007 at 5:23 pm
Thanks everyone for your comments so far …
I’ll try to answer them in turn …
@mark.riggs - Just repeat the procedure …
Optionen > Sprache > Englisch
The exit and restart CamStudio and you should be back to how it started.
@lexpauld - Frankly, I’m not sure - I’ll consult my docs and get back to you.
@jcnork - Right now, no. For the simple fact that I don’t have the original source code for that function, it was pulled from 2.0’s original source release.
If someone has it, or knows the person who wrote it or would like to code a similar function, you’re more than welcome.
@Michael - glad you’re benefitting from it. All your donations will be welcomed! :o) I hope you’re making all your application’s source code available to all purchasers after purchasing, otherwise you’re in breach of the GPL.
@jas20 - feel free to make a video. Send it to me via YouSendIt or Rapidshare and I’ll upload it to all my streaming video accounts.
@zmdl - you’re very welcome! :o)
@jfohl3r - Again, you’re welcome. Great news that it works on Vista too.
@samoguz - thanks a lot of your support.

It didn’t detect lame as an encoding option where it did before. Doesn’t matter much though because I usually record pcm anyway. I really appreciate the work, I’ve made 100 youtube videos with it lol so I’ll definitely be bug testing. It’s actually really cool because virtualdub upgraded too.

I’ve uploaded the XP one but haven’t had time for the Vista one (which is already recorded).
You can download the SWF at:

It will stay up for 7 days.
I’ll try and put the Vista one up tomorrow.

Hey thanks for recording that, but I need the AVI “source” version of the videos as none of the streaming video websites will accept SWFs.
If you can upload both versions to YouSendIt or Rapidshare, I’ll download them a.s.a.p and get them in my video accounts.

Hey JimmyRCom
Hmm … no LAME MP3 detection? Not sure what happened there. You could try renaming or deleting the INI files, rebooting the computer and then start 2.5 up and see if it detects it then.
Didn’t know about VirtualDub … I’m still using 1.5.10
Let me know how it goes.

WMV should be fine - I know YouTube will accept those.
If the video’s filesize is massive, try re-encoding with VirtualDub and using MP3 as the audio codec - that will dramatically reduce the AVI size.

In Vista, once you enable it, you can either choose it, or make it default.

Thanks for keeping Castudio alive. In effect I just discovered it and I am so lucky to join just in time for this new release.
The quality of the capture is astonishing… but I have one issue: I need more navigation control in the SWF: a progress bar to know where I am and to jump back a little if I missed something… there is a way to enhance the SWF controls or to generate a plain FLV instead of a SWF (so I can use it with wrapper like this: http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_Video_Player)
I already tried SUPER to convert the AVI made with Camstudio to FLV… but all I got was horrible quality and a filesize even bigger than SWF… so I fear that SWF is not just a simple FLV+player.
Maybe I’m a little confused… could you help?
Thanks!
27 jas2o // Sep 10, 2007 at 8:49 am
I don’t think you can use both Stereo Mix and Microphone at the same time. Maybe that could be a future feature (Dual Input)?
You can use Windows Movie Maker to drop in the background music, and use CamStudio for the microphone.
If you want more than just a music file, make Microphone the default input, use Sound Recorder for that, and CamStudio for Stereo Mix. Use Windows Movie Maker to merge, trim, sync, adjust volume (click “part” -> Clip -> Audio/Video [what ever the part is] > Volume).
I could make a video if you don’t get it…

Try checking MCI Recording in the audio options and increasing the Recording Thread Priority setting in CamStudio to Above Normal or High.
Also shut down anything that doesn’t need to be running during recording and when you can, get hold of another 512MB of RAM because you’ll really notice the difference when doing anything graphically and CPU intensive.
Hope that helps.

Hi and thanks for software develpment!
Tried 2.5beta1 but in totally crashed and stayed stuck in debugging mode … just while making settings (in Win2000). Had to reboot to make it go away.
2.0 on the other hand works, except I cannot get up to 30FPS 600×800 (full screen) capture (~2GHz CPU) during Halo (1) demo gameplay. Regardless of settings and codec, it starts at ~15FPS and progressively drops to ~7FPS. Picture progressive lags the sound, losing more sync the longer it captures.
Any suggestions / solutions to any of these problems?
Thanks again!

Does anyone have a guide to successfully using the screen annotations? I would truly appreciate some assistance in learning how to use/implement screen annotations into my Cam Studio projects. I would greatly appreciate any assistance!

Being developer, i know how many hours you must have put into it. Very impressed with the Annotations and how smooth they move, but im yet to discover how to use them. I tried to ‘trow’ some in during the show, but thats surely replays funny
Anyways, Im actually looking for info on how to compile Cam Studio. What version / compiler do you use ?. I tried with MS visual studio 2005 express and it gave tons of errors and missed some odbc32.lib. It was able to convert the project file, but it did not run. It does compile other projects.
Any hints ?
And thank you again. It s really nice application.

Thanks for the link - I’ve uploaded MSVCR71.dll to the “dev” folder as well.

You can set keyboard shortcuts in CamStudio by clicking:
Options > Keyboard Shortcuts
@dmantz
If I get some time this week I’ll try to record a quick video tutorial explaining how to use the screen annotations - it’s pretty simple stuff, honest!
@Metavoid
I don’t know much about the best ways to compile CamStudio, but I was under the impression that Express versions of Visual Studio don’t have all the necessary libraries and stuff to compile more complex apps - I think you need the full version.
If this info is wrong, please feel free to correct me here.
59 Metavoid // Oct 22, 2007 at 5:16 pm
@Nick.
Well you have to download the SDK for windows as well and integrate.. You dont get buildin dialog “drawing” and some build features are missing, but you can build all kinds of apps. I use it for wxwidgets and blender / ogre and .net. But might need driver sdk for some part of CamStudio ? But if your programmer told you that you need full version, then he knows for sure.

Is there any trick to using the MSU lossless screen capture codec? (I know the screen resolution has to be an even number). When I try using that codec, the first frame is a slanted rendition of the actual screen, and subsequent frames are just random lines of color. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the codec, tried different resolutions, framerates, etc., to no avail.
61 flyfisher // Nov 2, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Hello,
I’ve created a good number of 30 to 50 minute videos with CamStudio. I’ve discovered that the audio gets increasingly out of sync with the video. By the end of a 50 minute video, the audio is approximately 10 seconds ahead.
I used the Audio Synchronization option to Timeshift the audio to the max of 5000 milliseconds (That’s 5 seconds, right?). The result is the audio is synch’d at some point in the middle of the video, but is off at the beginning and the end.
I used DivX 6.7 Codec for compression. I experimented with video settings and came up with pretty good results in terms of video quality versus file size.
I have the following questions -
1) Has anyone else experienced this problem?
2) Has anyone come up with a solution to
get good synchronization throughout a 50 minute video?
3) What causes the de-synchronization? Is it the compression process?
4) I’m trying to make quick and easy videos of 30 to 60 minute online video sessions for my personal use. I’ll gladly share my experiences and settings with interested parties trying to do the same.
Is anyone interested in discussing and sharing Video Options settings, audio synchronization issues, minimizing files sizes, etc.?
Thanks to Mick for his efforts to keep CamStudio viable.

@Flyfisher
Hi Fred
Here are my personal settings FWTW …
When recording my desktop actions, I use the CamStudio Lossless Codec
In CamStudio, I select Quality @ 60- 70% (I test this with a short demo video)
Keyframes every 30 frames
Capture frames every 50 milliseconds
Playback Rate = 20 frames per second
For the audio, I will use PCM (no compression) if I’m going to create Flash video and MP3 if I’m uploading to YouTube, etc.
40kbit/s bitrate, 44KHz sample rate, Mono and MCI Recording checked.
If I’m recording video footage playing in MediaPlayer (or similar) I use either the DiVX Pro 6.7 codec or the XViD codec from xvid.org (actually mine’s ancient: December 30th 2005!! I must remember to upgrade :o)
My XViD settings are: Home Theatre PAL, Two Pass, 2nd Pass, 256 Target bitrate
My DiVX settings are: Home Theatre Profile, 1-Pass, 802.585 target bitrate
I need to adjust my DiVX/XViD settings for the best quality per filesize, but they’re what I’m using right now.
HTH
Cheers
Nick
P.S. Oh and checking MCI Recording in the Microphone Audio Options should rectify the audio/video desync.
64 flyfisher // Nov 5, 2007 at 11:14 pm
For Everyone,
After experimenting with many test videos, I’ve currently settled on the following settings to obtain a good quality/small file size .avi recording of an online video.
Under Video Options, I use the following settings –
Compressor Settings:
‘DivX 6.7 Codec’ (I installed this separately from the www.DivX.com website. I picked up this tip from a YouTube video.)
Under Configure button, I use –
‘720HD Profile’
Speed vs Quality ‘8′ (this is max)
Rate Control - ‘1-pass quality-based’ & Target quantizer defaults to ‘4′
Quality: ‘100′
Use Auto Adjust check box to set:
Set Key Frames Every - ‘5′ frames
Capture Frames Every - ‘200′ milliseconds
Playback Rate - ‘5′ frames/second
Options
‘Record audio from microphone’ must be checked.
Under Audio Options>Audio Options for Microphone –
Audio Capture Device - ‘Default Input Device’ for my desktop computer; ‘WaveOut Mix’ for my notebook/laptop computer because using the above resulted in a very poor quality/low volume recording. I’m not sure why this is, but if anyone out there does, please share.
All other Audio Options settings are left at the defaults of ‘22.05 kHz, stereo, 16 bit’, ‘PCM’, Interleave every ‘100′ milliseconds.
I don’t have any option to choose MP3 format. Why is that?
I leave ‘Use MCI Recording’ unchecked. (Checking it results in very poor/unsusable audio. But, I have the desync problem mentioned above.)
Nick,
As you suggested above, I tried using ‘MCI Recording’ on my notebook/laptop to eliminate the audio/video desync problem, however, it didn’t work; audio quality was so poor it was unusable. Any ideas? What is MCI Recording?
I clicked the Help button there and got an error pop-up ‘Cannot find file:///C:…‘
Additionally, I tried the main Help menu and got the same error pop-up.
I’d be interested in hearing about other user experiences with various settings. And, I’d really like to resolve the desync problem.
Thanks for your time,
Fred

Great Stuff!
How would one go about using x264 codec instead of xvid for capture/compression?
I noticed the MTU lossless was an option after I installed that.
Thanks - Rick

Mick,
Here’s one of the FAQ’s regarding audio problems with CamStudio. I thought I’d show it here for those following this thread I started regarding my video desync problem.
From the FAQ:
When I record audio from the microphone, the sound comes out “choppy” or “jumpy”. I am using Win 98.
Try changing the compressed format in Options : Audio Options : Audio Options for Microphone to PCM.
If changing to PCM still does not solve the problem, select the “Use MCI Recording” checkbox in Audio Options for Microphone. This has the same effect as using Windows Sound Recorder to record the sound. However, do note that using MCI Recording will bypass the compressed format and no audio compression will be applied to the audio. Furthermore, you may need to configure the sound device in Control Panel. For more information, please refer to the help file on MCI Recording.
(Note: The last line is struck through in the actual FAQ. I assume that means the help file was eliminated, as I noted in the previous entry.)
So…. I still have the following questions with regards to making CamStudio recordings on my new HP laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium –
1) Why does using the ‘Use MCI Recording’ result in unacceptable audio, but not using it gives fine results?
2) Even if the above did work, without audio compression, I assume the file sizes would be become very large. So, …
Is it correct to assume the compression process causes the desync?
If so, would a different compression scheme solve or give an option to deal with the desync?
And, is it feasible to modify CamStudio to manage desync while still allowing for audio compression?
I’ve read about one other user who had a similar problem. Anyone else out there experiencing desync problems? Or, audio quality problems using the ‘Use MCI Recording’ option?
Regards,
Fred

@Flyfisher
Thanks for the DivX settings, Fred - I’ll make a note of them in case I get anyone asking me for help with that.
Regarding the MCI/Desync issues … I did some research on it before and what I found seemed to be saying that the rate of desync increases when you drop the audio sample rate down to 22kHz.
I don’t have a lot of knowledge on this but when I changed the sample rate back up to 44kHz and selected MCI recording, my desync issues vanished.
An additional benefit was the audio in my SWFs improved too.
I believe MCI is the “Media Control Interface” which is Windows standard system commands for playing and recording multimedia files …
As usual, anyone feel free to correct me …

Hi,
I have a question about CamStudio usage.
Can I use it to make a presentation of my commercial software and distribute it with the software and/or post the presentation on a website? Basically can I use it for any purpose?
Also it would be nice if a list of audio and video codecs and where to find them can be posted on the Camstudio website for newbies. The built-in codecs are good but I’d like to know if there are more codecs out there. I am finding it hard to locate (on the internet) audio and video codecs that are free for commercial use.
Thanks.

Will you provide a camstudio ActiveX component for developers? because reading thousands of lines code is too time consuming. If we have ActiveX component, we can use the powerful features of your program, it is fantastic!

Hello there Nick.
I’d like to say and congratulate you for this outstanding software. it really is just a handy tool. I’ve been using it to screen capture my painting process (check my website: www.lfocstudios.net in the extras section)
The program doesn’t lag my computer and is working great on the new Vista OS.
Anyway, I have no critique to say on the workflow. I just have a crit for the interface.
You have the same icons for all the main functions on the main interface. I suggest you change them all to enhance the program further.
That’s all.
Great work

Absolutely awesome program. Unbeleiveable that it’s still free. I’m a graphic designer (see: www.BobLeeCreative.com) and am using CamStudio to teach illustration of my design work. Very easy to use, powerful and very professional.
I would be honored to do any graphics that you need to enhance the software even further. You certainly may contact me at BobLee@BobLeeCreative.com.
It really would be my honor!

87 Torbjorn // Dec 24, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Tyrone: I think other programs, like GameCam, Fraps, Taksi and maybe HyperCam are better suited for recording games. Some of those are free (Taksi even open source), some are not.
On a completely different note:
I realize that it is almost two months ago, and that rhhendrickson may very well have found the answer, but I’ll post it anyway:
If one wishes to use x264 for recording, or compression via programs like Virtualdub, then this is the one to install:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DTS_x264_VfW.htm
After installation it will appear in the codec-lists of both Camstudio and Virtualdub. I use it myself, for encoding videos captured with Camstudio (for capture I use the MSU-codec). Usually multipass with a bitrate of ca. 100 — the results are pretty good.
And by the way, should any one wish to use Lame for encoding audio, then check this one out:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/LAME_ACM_Codec.htm

95 Mouseless // Mar 10, 2008 at 10:44 pm
I’m having a bit of trouble I hope someone can help with. I have tried the 2.0 and the new 2.5beta as well. As soon as I hit the record button, the mouse pointer disappears. If I right-click I can get a dialog box, but I otherwise I have no idea where on the screen I am. This is whether full screen or fixed region (I can see the mouse until I draw the region, then gone). Luckily I remembered that F9 stops the recording!
Anyone know how I can get the mouse to show while I’m recording? I’m running 1024×768 @16bit (tried 32, no luck). Tried various options but they’re all blind alleys. Even when I go to save the result, I have to tab around!
Thanks.
96 Mouseless // Mar 10, 2008 at 11:49 pm
By the way, I have the Cursor Option set to “show,” and have tried custom cursors and highlight, to no avail. Also, the mouse pointer does appear when playing the AVI or SWF file.

whenever I tell it to record audio, the video playback drops away. I am using Vista. the media info program says the PCM playback is a Microsoft codec, so I don’t see why this wouldn’t be working.
Any tips? Anyone else experiencing this issue?

99 RichardCheese78 // Mar 28, 2008 at 4:13 am
No more “record from speakers”??? Why the not??? Why even have a 2.5 when it doesnt include that incredibly important feature??
And yes, before you mention it, I saw the youtube tutorial on getting it to record from speakers but, why do we have to jump through hoops to do what version 2 did inherently?
Why put a handle on a bag? Why have wheels on your car?
I am trying with great imagination….to even begin to understand why the “record from speakers” option was removed. It defies all logic, and as far as oversights go, is baffling. This is now an unuseable program. I’m sure there is a much better alternative, any suggestions?
100 Nick // Mar 28, 2008 at 9:13 am
@RichardCheese78
Um … if you read the blog post above it says why:
Recording Audio From Speakers - REMOVED DUE TO LACK OF SOURCE CODE
I also posted in these comments WHY we weren’t able to include it. (Comment #9 to be precise!)
I’d hardly call CamStudio “unusable” without this feature (as the hundreds of thousands of people who download it every year I’m sure will testify.)
With respect maybe you should actually READ a post properly before commenting like that!

Nick,
Great product. I’m using it to offline record archives of an online class I am taking because they disappear at the end of the semester. Some of the classes are a few hours long and the preset time only goes up to 2 hours. I would like to change this control so that it accepts a higher limit.
My question is, what exact development environment do you use to build this? I have access to just about everything through school and I would like to just open the source, make a change, and hit build without experiencing much drama. Programming isn’t my most up-to-date skill.
Thanks!

CamStudio 2.5 Beta seems to work perfectly fine with Windows Vista 32-bits, BUT, on my laptop, I am currently running Winodws Vista 64-bits, which seems to be incompatible. The message I recieve regarding this issue is “This application has failed to start because MFC71.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.” Is there a possible solution to this issue?
Thank you for your time~

Hello Nick,
Cheers for making such a great product. I’ve been using it to create user tutorials for a CMS and it’s working wonderfully. In 90% of the cases I’ve had no issues, but sometimes when I go to convert the AVI to SWF, SWF producer cuts out at 50% consistently. There are no problems with the avi file. Sometimes re-recording the screencast will work but that gets a bit cumbersome at times. Any suggestions?

At the bottom of the blogpost you’ll find the solution to your problem. You can download the missing file form the same place you downloaded the beta, and then put in the Camstudio folder, or C:\Windows\System32.
