Calling all coding geeks!
CamStudio user Tim McCarthy has spent a lot of his time over the last few days going through the source for the CamStudio Recorder program and has fixed a load of bugs and sorted out some of the (apparently) nightmare-inducing code.
It’s been uploaded to Sourceforge and is ready for people to compile into a working program.
And this is where I need your help …
I need coding geeks with Visual Studio 2008 (Professional, not Express) to compile the latest code to make sure it starts, stops, etc.
If you’re interested in helping out, let me know in the comments below.
The more, the merrier. As soon as I’ve set-up the Beta Testers mailing list, I’ll send you details of how to sign up for it.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Cheers
Nick
P.S. Got some cool news coming soon, thanks to a software engineer who works for a search engine company that starts with “G” and rhymes with “Shmoogle” – stay tuned!
EDIT: BTW, if you’d like to help but don’t have a copy of Visual Studio 8 Pro, you can download a free 90-day copy directly from Microsoft using this shortened link:
http://snipurl.com/vs2008trialĀ [download_microsoft_com]
It’s a 3.3GB ISO, so you’ll need to be patient and burn the image to a DVD using DeepBurner, Nero, etc.
EDIT #2: A great tip from Michael in the comments – Students can also get VS2008 Pro and other cool tools from Microsoft for free – check out Dreamspark at https://downloads.channel8.msdn.com. Thanks Mike!

wish I can find someone in China will help you, so I posted this news on my blog.
Althout I use wink to creat software tutorials, CamStudio is really a great tool.
Wish the new version will be better.
and I ‘d like to have more people to know it, to use and enjoy it.

@xbeta
Thanks for spreading the word so quickly.
I totally agree with you, Wink is a fantastic tool, especially if you want to create presentation/learning type videos.
CamStudio is better suited for step-by-step instructional type videos.
But if you have both of them on your computer, you’re covered!
Cheers again

Hi All!
Thanks to Nick and everyone for lending a hand. I’ll be making posts to the forum here and sourceforge to give more/as much infromation about what is needed. Use Nick’s sign up and warm up your compilers and fasten your seatbelts!

Quick fix: the vscap project fails to link in release due to the CxImage.lib. There are 2 issues in the vscap project: remove the CxImage library from the linker input-additional dependencies; then change the project dependencies to have CxImage and hook. Then CxImage should depend on all the static image libraries (jasper, jpeg, png, etc.) The build should then complete.

I installed CamStudio about three weeks ago. I had a little trouble getting the audio to record but it is fine now. I have captured several videos successfully using FullScreen and F8 for Record and F9 for Stop.
But today I recorded a 1:25 webinar but after I stopped and was asked for a file name, CamStudio said it couldn’t find the video file. It happened a second time. But I recorded 2 mins of it with no problems.
Is the a limit on how long the video can be? I had 6GB free on C:
Thanks
21 twidlar // Feb 19, 2009 at 1:21 am
That’s 1:25:00.
22 twidlar // Feb 20, 2009 at 12:24 am
Evidently CamStudio has a limit on how long a fullscreen video can be of around 22 min.
23 BleeBlap // Feb 20, 2009 at 2:31 pm
This limit is actually due to the size of the uncompressed .avi file that is being generated. Once this file is over about 2 gb in size standard 32bit file APIs are unable to handle it. If you change some of your settings to decrease quality you should be able to record fullscreen for longer.
There have been suggestions for ways to work around this limitation, however they have not been implemented yet. For now, if you can sacrifice quality, I recommend decreasing your quality settings. If not you can start a new recording every 20 minutes and put them back together with a free video editing software such as Virtual Dub.

Build of Recorder fails on VS2008 (Vista64), seemingly due to issues with WIN32 #ifdefs in CxImage. Everything else appears to work.
CxImage on WIN32 is missing the Load method, which EffectsOptions2 and Screen try to use. I think these two should be using LoadResource instead on Windows.
There’s also this error:
1>Screen.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol “public: static unsigned long __cdecl CxImage::GetTypeIdFromName(char const *)” (?GetTypeIdFromName@CxImage@@SAKPBD@Z)

I’ll be happy to test. I have visual studio 2008 professional running on Windows 7.
