Hi All
This is a request for Vista users …
Ghosty121212 posted a comment on this page saying that you can get CamStudio working on Vista, doing the following:
Right click on the application > Select compatibility > then choose run compatibility with Windows XP SP2.
It runs just like XP now!
Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, it’s true. I’m working on Windows Vista Home Premium Edition. The only thing I noticed that isn’t working fine is the keyboard’s shortcuts. Everything else seems to works just fine.

sound may work in vista basic, it uses .wav files. I have vista ultimate and the sound is really bad. ultimate uses .wma files.

This is not true, because Camstudio doesn’t work on Windows Vista, because of the graphic drivers. It messes up scree resolution when trying to substitute for Windows XP. If the program does work on this then I go WOW.

It works! I did what you said about selecting XP compatibility (i had no idea that i could do that on Vista) and now the videos are Ok, but no audio when i try to record audio from Speakers: I try to configure the audio options and this message still appears: “WaveoutGetSelectControl() failed.”
Anyway, thanks for the Tip!
(excuse my english)

This was one of the first things I tried when I downloaded CamStudio. Unfortunately, it did not work for me.

I can confirm. By default, the recorded screen was garbled, but I when I did this trick, the picture and the sound were perfect. I used the Techsmith codec though, but even that didn’t work before this trick.

I can confirm that it works, but only if you also grant the application Administrator Permissions.

When I right click, I don’t see anything about Windows XP. It would have been helpful if someone who knows how to do this would make a CamSudio video and post on YouTube.

This is driving me crazy. I’ve downloaded and been able to run successfully–but every time I save the file (as an AVI), and watch it play successfully, I can never find the file again. It is not showing up in the CAMSTUDIO directory where it was saved to in the dialog box. I’ve done a SEARCH from the START button and it can’t find the files either. I am pretty computer savvy–but this has me stumped!!

Never mind–I am able to open the PLAYER component to Camstudio and “Send” the file elsewhere, where I can then “see it”. Strange, strange behavior, though…

@jerrypettit
Do you have “Options > Program Options > Name of AVI file” set to “Ask For Name” ?
Cheers

Okay, this is TOTALLY the solution for Vista users, anyone who gets the “WaveoutGet…blah blah” error, who only hears static on the audio, etc. At least it worked for me.
All you gotta do is open up your Sound control panel, click on the “Recording” tab, then right-click anywhere in the menu that shows all your recording devices. You should see the options “Show Disabled Devices” and “Show Disconnected Devices” each with or without a check-mark. Make it so that both of these are checked, especially Disabled Devices, and a new item should appear, the “Stereo Mix”. Once that’s enabled, and your other microphone(s) are disabled, CamStudio works FINE as if it was recording from speakers.
AWESOME. And I’m totally un-technologically savvy, just lucked onto this, so take that all you programmers and dorks. That is, if it works for anybody else.

@ mcclenj
When I do check both of those, “Stereo Mix” does not appear.
Any help…?
