http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrExLnRwMRc&feature=related

This video shows it!
This is only for Vista people.
Also, if you don't see "stereomix" under recording, "Waveout mix" is basically the same thing :)
After all of that, make sure you have it "AUDIO UNDER RECORDING" in Camstudio and NOT speakers.
With Waveout/Steromix recording, it acts exactly like the speakers.~ The quality of the audio improves by a lot too!

It works fine for me in Vista except for this:

I can't find the output files.

Oh, I can find them in the Player, and Windows Movie Maker can find them, but when I go to the folder it finds them in in Windows Explorer, they don't show up (and yes, I have the view set to show hidden files & folders).

I've even tried draging the file out of the "Open File" window... but when I let go it says the file is no longer there (to copy from, I presume)... even though it's still there in the open file window and Player or Movie Maker can open it.

A hard drive search will not find it... it's baffling.

Okay, this is TOTALLY the solution for Vista users, anyone who gets the "WaveoutGet...blah blah" error, who only hears static on the audio, etc. At least it worked for me.

All you gotta do is open up your Sound control panel, click on the "Recording" tab, then right-click anywhere in the menu that shows all your recording devices. You should see the options "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" each with or without a check-mark. Make it so that both of these are checked, especially Disabled Devices, and a new item should appear, the "Stereo Mix". Once that's enabled, and your other microphone(s) are disabled, CamStudio works FINE as if it was recording from speakers.

AWESOME. And I'm totally un-technologically savvy, just lucked onto this, so take that all you programmers and dorks. That is, if it works for anybody else.

Do you have "Options > Program Options > Name of AVI file" set to "Ask For Name" ?

Cheers

Never mind--I am able to open the PLAYER component to Camstudio and "Send" the file elsewhere, where I can then "see it". Strange, strange behavior, though...

This is driving me crazy. I've downloaded and been able to run successfully--but every time I save the file (as an AVI), and watch it play successfully, I can never find the file again. It is not showing up in the CAMSTUDIO directory where it was saved to in the dialog box. I've done a SEARCH from the START button and it can't find the files either. I am pretty computer savvy--but this has me stumped!!
