Not all computer drivers allow stereo mix. I imagine this is due to pressure from the RIAA, but do not know for sure why they'd eliminate it from their driver package.
There is a way to get around this if you have a line-in or even a mic-in jack, by using an attenuating patch cord from the speaker-out or headphone-out jack and back in through those. Radio Shack sells such a thing. Here's the link:
