    Likely noise from your motherboard is leaking into your integrated audio card. I bought a Focusrite 2i2 USB audio interface for $150 at Sweetwater Sound to eliminate that problem. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Scarlett2i2

    This might sound odd but you might try plugging your PC/Laptop directly in to the mains outlet and not share it on one of those multi-socket units.

    This was the first solution offered at my local tech-store and I know that multi-sockets cause issues for video when doing astro-photography.

    That is curious... what kinds of problems?
    I've been in audio for 50 years and never encountered an issue that was due to using power strips. Now, an open ground - that's another thing! And plugging into different wall sockets will DEFINITELY contribute to ground-loops and hums. Powerstrips, even daisy-chained together, help eliminate that. (Of course, do not exceed the power strip's amperage/wattage ratings.)
