Windows 7 64 bit problem

edited January 2010 in Support
I have a Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit machine where I installed the most recent build of Camstudio found here (also tried the older builds, including the one built in release mode):

It installs fine, but when I try to run Recorder.exe, I get this error message:

"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."

Event log gives this error:
"Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\CamStudio\Recorder.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.DebugCRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis."

"Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\CamStudio\Recorder.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.MFC,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis."

depending on which build I use. Copying the 3 dll's mentioned here to the install dir does not help:
Tried to run in compability mode (XP SP3 and Vista), but this did not help.

I installed the older version as described here (without the codec though):, and this worked without problems so this is no urgent issue for me. Anyways, just wanted to contribute so you can keep up the excellent work and make a version also working on Win7 64 bit, which I guess gets more and more common.

  • I believe the issue you have about the side-by-side configuration error is due to the redistributedable not being installed. Please see the section labeled "Important Notes" at the top of the page on my site.

If you continue to receive these errors after installing that, please let me know.

Thanks for the detailed error report, it makes troubleshooting much easier.
