Windows 7 Problems
This message appears along with others when I try to record: Camstudio could not record the AVI file using the current compressor, use default compressor? Each time I say yes, it reverts back to the same statement. I get out of this, I select NO.
Comments
That is always due to width and height not being even-numbers, using a codec of the MPEG-4 family (like DivX or Xvid or h.264).
2.6b works properly with the fixed region numbers on most computers, while windows sized with Sizer need to be sized one pixel less to overcome a glitch.
2.6c works properly with Sizer windows, but the glitch is moved to the Fixed Region settings, making you have to enter dimensions one pixel less than the desired result. So, 1279X719 results in 1280X720 HD and works properly with Xvid and the others.
Whenever that error message comes up, I always know it is a dimensions issue. The "Default compressor" is Microsoft Video 1, which is awful but serviceable in a pinch.
As I told pstein a moment ago, definitely use a compressor like Xvid or h.264. Never use a lossless codec unless you absolutely require archival-quality captures.
See this video for much info that will help you, including discussion of this sizing bug, as well as the other videos in my playlist.

Barry, the "Show More" section of that video has all these links in it:
This video covers how to run CamStudio 2.0 in Windows 7, how to run it at the same time as CamStudio 2.6b or 2.6c, setting up Jawor's Xvid, Sizer, Zoomit and some audio settings, and just about everything I could think of that would get everyone up and running on the technical end of things with CamStudio!

That's all the things discussed in the video. I use 2.6c beta but it is not entirely bug-free yet. (The main bug is explained in the video...)
