Xvid problems
Using xvid:
CamStudio could not record the AVI file using the current compressor. Use default compressor?
Yes and no both do nothing.
Other codecs work, but not as well. Xvid works in Virtualdub.

That is always caused by the size not being even-numbered dimensions, or being one of the rare non-qualifying dimensions. See the 2012 tech video I posted for more about that as well as answers to other issues often encountered.
