lossless codec

edited January 2011 in Support
I recently downloaded camstudio and tried out the desktop recorder. It's pretty cool, but I immediately noticed that the capture is not 100% accurate. The video is more "smudgy". So I downloaded and installed the lossless codec, but this resulted in virtually no change.

Could I have possibly improperly installed the lossless codec? I looked through but found nothing more in the help area. Any advice is appreciated.

    DrZygote214,

The CamStudio lossless codec is for specific applications - namely, screencast tutorials involving mostly un-moving screens and cursor movement upon those.

Better codecs for motion-intensive captures are discussed in the nearby thread on comparing codecs. Be aware that not all codecs appear in every version of CamStudio. Different versions and different builds exhibit different codecs in their listings.
    See:
    http://screencasttutorial.org/camstudioVersions.html

I personally like the ffdshow video codec. Get that at http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

Search the comments for that and you'll find Nick's recommended settings (also in the comparing codecs thread)

I also have installed the VFW and ACM codecs from the k-lite mega codec pack http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_mega_codec_pack.htm

Do not install ALL of them! You will have troubles if you do.

I hope that helps. http://screencasttutorial.org has lots of information, and so does this forum! Look at the sticky threads, and use search on "comments" and you can find much helpful information.

I'm working on an article right now concerning maximizing performance for full-motion video captures using CamStudio. Stay tuned!

    Terry
