Requesting Camstudio Help

edited February 2011 in Support
Hi there.

I'm experiencing some issues with Camstudio, that I've yet to come across in the forums, or threads. It's rather annoying, as even googling my problems doesn't return with any positive results.

So when I have Camstudio on 'Microsoft Video 1', at default settings. I can record things with it just fine; and when I go to review the playback, the FPS is perfect.. Yet everything is tinted blue. Pictures illustrating below.

The last picture is an image of the different codecs ( Which I've perused around the other threads, thinking maybe if I had them it'd work ) that I've downloaded, yet to no avail.. The only break I've caught with this thing so far, is by using the tutorial and settings in this guy video:

However, even following his instructions to a T. The video still appears to be choppy, and has laggy spikes which makes it unwatchable.

Also, I don't have a specific purpose in mind for Camstudio. Maybe pull videos off of youtube, or getting captures of live things. So I'm not using it for game capturing..

With all of that in mind, does anyone have any clues about what I can do to fix it? How I can finally manage to use it decently?

  • Dakishino13,

Please try this article and let me know if you are still getting the blue tint.

  • I tried most, if not all of that.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post I'm running Windows 7 Ulitmate.. I suppose that would've helped.

Even after having Camstudio change the 'Desktop Composition' when it's running, there was no change in the 'blue tint'.. If you could suggest another codec, that would give me the same framerate, perhaps? I have no idea what else to do, and I really wish this would work.
  • Dakishino13,

I've heard good things about the Lagarith lossless codec. CamStudio Lossless is effective, but is simple (working like a ZIP for videos, I've been told). So, it is most effective for still screens, like browser recordings of internet pages not having much motion content, and slide shows. Lagarith Lossless apparently works well with motion video (tested with Google Earth "tours"). It can be found in the K-lite mega codec pack -- but seriously, no matter how tempting, only install the ones you will be actually using from that pack or other problems could arise. That has been reported by others, and experienced by myself early on before I knew better!

  • Hey there, Terry. So I decided to go with the Mega-Pack; and use the lagarith codec. The results are amazing, smooth running FPS; and I can use the normal settings with no issues.

My only complaint is that it doesn't play in VLC, as VLC doesn't play 'LAG' files. However I used the xVid movie player, and it worked just fine. So I can deal with that at the very least. I thank you a lot for your help.

Also I was sure to do a 'custom' sort of K-Lite install, and only grabbed the codecs.. Will that be a problem later on down the road?

    Dakishino13,

That is great news! Thank digiday here for doing the exhaustive testing that revealed how well Lagarith worked with CamStudio!

You can easily convert the Lagarith lossless capture to h.264, etc. using the free version of Any Video Converter.

Down the road with the K-lite Mega Codec pack, you can always add any playback or recording codecs you might find useful. You simply run the installer again. I cannot imagine any problems emerging from not installing particular components from that pack.
