Gaming Playback Problems

edited December 2010 in Support
I'm using CamStudio 2.0 to make videos from my Games. When I try to do so however, there are aways black "freezes" in gameplay for a few frames. Here are some examples:

http://i54.tinypic.com/119xb0l.jpg (Before the black flash)
http://i53.tinypic.com/k186yu.jpg (The flash, which lasts for 2 frames)
http://i53.tinypic.com/2yoz636.jpg (After the flash)

This happenes on all games I play and try to record. I think this "flashing" may have something to do with DirectX. I've tried experimenting with different options, such as changing the video encoder, modifying the quality ect. But so far nothing has worked.

Note that this does not happen during the actual recording itself, but in the final video playback.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm on XP sp3.

  • What video codec are you using? Have you tried other recording software?
  • I figured it out. I need to run games in window mode.
  • Yep run games like The Sims 2 in windowed mode helps.
Also try versions 2.5 and 2.6. Those versions might be better. I tried version 2.5 to record a Pokemon game in an emulator called "DeSmuMe" and the output was acceptable.
  • I'm still having this problem with games that I CANNOT run window mode in. I tried 2.6 and it has much less flickering. Still annoying though :/
  • See the last posts in this thread, Chim Chimpso. It shows how to use Xvid.

  • Still getting the flickering. I'm going to take a bet and say this has something to do with DirectX games. I used it on a Java game and had none of this flickering.

Really need a solution, I've tried all the codecs, nothing has worked :(

UPDATE: I tried switching the Recording Thread Priority to "Above Normal" and I encountered less flickering then usual. It's still annoying though, and setting it to "Highest" just makes it worse.

I'm using the Microsoft Video 1 codec now (since all codecs produce the same flickering effect, this is the best one right now).

    Chim Chimpso,

Actually, Microsoft Video 1 is the worst choice. What settings did you set the Xvid codec to in your trial? Did you disable as many "extra" display features as possible? Are you in 16-bit color? Did you try to disable DirectDraw from the "troubleshooting" TAB in the "Advanced Settings" area of your display settings (the "minus-3" setting of the slider)? [Get to the "Advanced Settings" from the button on the Display Settings tab.)

What player is this flickering happening on? VLC? Winamp?

The fact that it is only happening on playback might be a key, but I'd attack the recording end first.

Odd stuff - I hope we can solve it.
