Cannot get temp video to play

edited June 2011 in Support
Hey guys, recently made a video and it reached 4gb in size. It then would not allow me to save the video so I had to ctrl, alt, delete the program. The video was saved in my temp folder but I cannot get the file to play back on any player. Can anyone give me any advice on how to get this file to play or is it lost? Thanks in advance

You might try running it through VirtualDub (a free program that you can download several places on the web). There are several threads in this forum where this is discussed, including one in the last week or so. The main thing to remember before trying to process it is to be sure the video option is Direct Stream Copy, not Full Processing, which is the default. The audio defaults to Direct Stream Copy, but it would be well to check it.

When the options are set properly, process with F7. The program will ask you to name the file. I usually just put "virtdub" at the beginning of the existing file name, associating the two files.

Since your file is twice the maximum size that AVI permits, it may not work, but it has resurrected an otherwise unusable file for me many times, so it seems to be worth a try. One more thing:

    Good luck!

Edited to add: Here's another thread with a similar discussion: http://camstudio.org/forum/discussion/696/no-avi-files-after-recording-only-two-wav#Item_5
  • Tried that but it gives an error saying it is an unknown or unsupported file type

Be sure the file name has the AVI extension.

    crazyshea,

I've tried rescuing ones as large as you have, but never was able to. 3GB was about the largest I've been able to get to work.

See this thread for a discussion.
    http://camstudio.org/forum/discussion/658/req-recommended-settings-for-recording-for-90-min.

Use these settings in the future to get up to 3 hours at 1280X720HD. Adjust to fit. Smaller windows will allow you to get larger ones.

Compressor: Xvid - Profile setting: Xvid HD 720 http://xvid.org 32-bit version
    Or http://screencasttutorial.org/53/jawors-xvid-my-newest-codec-of-choice-for-games-webinars-or-tutorials-453
Compressor Quality: Use Xvid's own setting of 1
    Set Keyframes Every: 100 frames
    Capture Frames Every: 100 milliseconds
    Playback Rate: 10 frames/second
Fixed Region: 1279X719 to overcome a bug being squashed that adds a pixel in Fixed Region - the resulting video will be 1280X720 - perfect for 720p HD at YouTube.
If you have a high-resolution monitor and want to capture more of the screen into your 1280X720 frame, lower the screen resolution to match.

In Audio, record from microphone, check "Use MCI to record". See "Stereo Mix" videos at my site for including program sound.

    Terry
