Cannot open or play a recording (first one)
Even though recording is "avi" extension, built in player will not open or play. Other video software access results: "unknown file format" or, "cannot open file"

That is simply not enough information for me to go on. What compressor did you use? What was your region size?
I advise people use Xvid nowadays, as it affords the best file sizes, ability to capture motion or stills, the fastest frames-per-second input rate, and looks great!

Keep your regions - width and height - as multiples of 2. Read all the articles at that site above if you want to really know what you are doing.
